1. (6.9a) How do methods of thermal energy transfer differ, including conduction, convection and radiation? (I can investigate and explain the methods of thermal energy transfer, including conduction, convection and radiation.) 2. (6.9b) How does thermal energy move? (I can verify through investigations that thermal energy moves in a predictable pattern from warmer to cooler until all the substances become the same tempterature.)
BUNDLE 6.9 A and B VOCAB WORDS
Conduction- the movement of heat between objects that touch each other. Heat passed through solid matter. Metals conduct heat well. Air is not as good a conductor of heat. This is a direct contact type of heat transfer. Example: a metal pot heating up on a stove burner.
Convection- the movement of heat energy through liquids and gases in currents. Heat transfer by the movement of mass from one place to another. It can take place only in liquids and gases. Inside our planet, these currents in the mantle (made of liquid rock) carry heat from the core to the surface of the Earth. Example: a lava lamp.
Radiation- the movement of energy through a medium or space in waves. This is the only way heat is transferred that can move through the relative emptiness of space. All other forms of heat transfer require motion of molecules like air or water to move heat. Example: getting a suntan while lying on a beach.
Law of Conservation of Energy- This states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can however be transferred to another form.
Thermal Equilibrium- Heat flows from warmer objects to cooler objects until all objects attain the same temperature. Heat moves to where there is less heat.
Temperature-The measurement of the average energy of motion (heat energy) of the particles of matter in a substance.
